What is the poem all about? Summarize the story of the poem. Speechless by Kyra Lee
The poem "Speechless" by Kyra Lee is all about a dysfunctional and abusive family. The poem reveals how Sasha, 6 and Leigh, 3 were abused by their father. The two are best friends and are together through the abuses. It also shows us a typical scene, a mother not doing anything about the abuses, perhaps for fear of her own life and just resorts to drinking. The story tragically ends when Sasha was killed for speaking up while Sasha was not able to do anything about it. The loss plus the guilt of not speaking up made a toll on Sashas conscience and psyche.
Republic Act 7610
The Philippines has a law protecting children against child abuse. This is the "Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act." In this law specific penalties are to be imposed for those who commit crimes against children such as child trafficking, sexual and physical abuse are subject to incarceration and fine. What is sad is that even with this law, there is still a growing number of children who are exploited.
Child Abuse at Home
Recent data indicate that most children who are abused are abused by someone they know at home or in the neighborhood. As much as 60% of physical abuses (beating, etc) happen where they should be safest, their homes. The only way this can be stopped is to ensure that we report the cases--but as seen in the poem--it is really difficult to stand up to abuse, because you also fear for your own safety.
